Style Rules and Guidelines

Manuscripts should be prepared according to the following style rules (deviation from these rules causes delays in publication).

Form of Manuscript

Submit manuscripts in triplicate. They should be double spaced on one side of 8.5 x 11-inch white paper. Number each page. Page 1 should contain the article title, the authors' names and complete affiliations (name of institution, city, state, and postal code), and a suggested running head of no more than 35 characters. The first page should also contain the name, complete mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the author to whom proofs should be sent. At the bottom of page 2 place any footnotes to the title (indicated by superscript *, , ). Page 2 should contain a summary of no more than 100 words that is suitable as an abstract, which should convey the main results of the paper and a list of key words.

List of Symbols

Attach to the final version of an accepted manuscript a complete list of symbols, identified typographically, not mathematically. This list will not appear in print but is essential in order to avoid costly author's corrections in proof. Distinguish between"oh," "zero", "el," "one"; "kappa," "kay", upper- and lowercase"kay", etc. Indicate also when special type is required (German, Greek, vector (bold), script, etc,); all other letters will be set in italic.

References

References should be styled and punctuated according to the following examples:

Santos, M. and Woodford, M. (1997), "Rational Asset Pricing Bubbles, Econometrica, 65, 19-57.

Sargent, Thomas J. (1987), Dynamic Macroeconomic Theory, Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press.

Equations

Equations should be numbered with the number placed in parentheses at the right margin. Reference to equations should use the form "Eq. (3)" or simply "(3)."

Tables

All tables should appear at the end of the manuscript on separate pages. Number tables consecutively with Roman numerals. Extensive tables will be scanned as visual images and so should be typed carefully and in the exact format desired. Authors will be charged for any new scans necessitated by changes in proof. Use superscript lowercase italic letters (a, b, c) for table footnotes, which should be typed immediately below the table with the same width as the table.

Figures

All illustrations are to be considered as figures. All figures should appear at the end of the manuscript on separate pages. Number each graph or drawing in sequence with Arabic numerals. Supply a descriptive legend of each figure. Type legends double spaced consecutively on a separate sheet. Figures must be submitted in a form suitable for reproduction. Plan figures to fit the proportions of the printed page. The final size of letters after reduction to fit the printed page should be between 6 and 10 points. Identify each figure in a margin with the name of the journal, author's name(s), and the figure number; avoid marking the backs of figures. The cost of color art must be defrayed by the author.

Footnotes

Footnotes in text should be avoided as much as possible. They should not be used for references. If they must be used, identify them by superscript Arabic numerals. In a final submission they should be typed together double spaced on a separate page.
